Great article, it literally touched upon all the details that I was looking for. One major problem I am having with the growl support is that when I add a new userscript it gives me an option to name it but nowhere to paste the userscript. This is my first attempt with fluid so please pardon the ignorance.

To hide the spam count, you could also create a filter with “is:spam” in the “has words” part and then apply “mark as read” as action. I found this tip on http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/07/hide-spam-counter-in-gmail.html

Hiding ads can be done with http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/48018
However, for some styles the “print all” and “new window” etc. options will overlap with other items. I modified some values in the line “var css = “@namespace …..” until these links were on the correct location.

Unread count didn’t work properly for me. It turns out this was because I didn’t use English in Gmail. Switching from Swedish to English solved this issue.

I reckoned that I could do without the gBar at the top-left (the thing that gives links to other Google properties) – and all the stuff top-right, too. (If you need ’settings’, simply punch up a separate browser, or hit “Create a filter -> Show current filters” to get into the settings dialogue.)

Given that, a clean look for a custom stylesheet could be as simple as the below, which removes both the top clutter bars, and adds a little space back again to make the design look balanced.

Thanks so much for your updated script. This has been on my to-do list for weeks now and just haven’t gotten around to it. I probably should have pointed-out for everyone’s benefit that all of my CSS and Javascript-based tweaks are very fragile. Any changes that Google makes to the structure of the HTML or the style definitions has the potential to break the code. I’m going to do my best to keep this stuff up-to-date.

It works now, but will obviously break whenever Google decides to change the stylesheet. Added logging to the javascript console too.
